Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases, or TIMPs are members of the family of tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). They exhibit multiple functions, including the inhibitory effect on MMPs, but they also they irreversibly inactivate MMPs by direct binding to their catalytic zinc cofactor and resultant inhibition of proteinase function. In addition they interact with various membrane receptors on the cell surface. TIMP1 in particular interacts with CD63. TIMPs are involved in a wide variety of biological functions, such as tumor angiogenesis and progression, wound healing, and vascular remodeling.
